Until the M25 opened the narrow main street of Ongar carried much of the traffic heading south to the Thames oil terminals and the Dartford crossing.

During World War Two, Ongar found itself placed amid three important airfields, RAF Station Chipping Ongar [ Willingale],  RAF Ongar and  RAF North Weald.
With a population of over 6,000, it is known locally as Ongar, it's full name is Chipping Ongar, with the smaller village of High Ongar about 1 mile to the north. 
 In the nearby village of Greensted, the Parish Church of St.Andrews is the oldest wooden church in the world and possibly the oldest wooden building in Europe.
